Fernando Alonso starred in one of the best performances of the entire 2022 season at the individual level at the United States Grand Prix, where he managed to come back from the back of the peloton after a serious accident with Lance Stroll to seventh place. However, after a protest from Haas about the state of his Alpine, which they considered to be dangerous because it had some hanging components, such as its rear-view mirror, it caused controversy.
The American team complained, and the FIA stewards, despite the fact that the document arrived 24 minutes late, decided to start investigating. Finally, and after several hours of deliberation, they made the decision to impose a 30-second penalty on the Asturian driver, which caused him to fall to 15th place, outside the points.
His team responded with another protest, and on the Thursday before the Mexican Grand Prix, the international federation retracted and returned his result, although social networks had been filled throughout the week with offensive comments against the judges of the Formula 1.
Much of the hateful comments were taken by Silvia Bellot , the Spanish from the FIA who was among the stewards at that United States GP and who is also this weekend at the Mexican GP. A commissioner whose name many already brought to the fore after that 2012 Brazilian GP in which Vettel was crowned three-time world champion against Alonso-Ferrari.
Such was the number of messages addressed to Silvia Bellot that Fernando Alonso himself, on his Instagram account, came out in his defense and condemned the attacks.
“I strongly condemn the recent abuse on networks that the FIA race commissioner, Silvia Bellot, has received,” wrote the man from Oviedo on his official account. “This type of behavior is unacceptable both in sport and in society.”
“More so when the comments are directed at volunteers from our sport and officials. I will continue to support the FIA and F1 in their efforts to continue in the right direction,” continued the Spaniard. “I call on everyone to do the same.”
It is not the first time that the two-time world champion has spoken about the stewards, since in his statements after the Austin race he assured that he hoped that the international federation was going in the right direction with the work of the new organization that entered at the end from last year with Mohammed ben Sulayem at the helm.
