The 2022 United States Grand Prix race began in a chaotic manner after the accident between Carlos Sainz and George Russell in the first corner that left the Spanish Ferrari driver out of action, who had already lost the lead a few meters before after starting from the pole position.
However, the incident that took almost all the limelight at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin was the one involving Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso’s Alpine.
On lap 22 of 56 and as soon as the race resumed after a safety car caused by Valtteri Bottas, the Asturian driver tried to overtake the Canadian on the back straight after taking the slipstream, in a battle for seventh place, but his movement was blocked by a swerve by the Aston Martin driver that caught the #14 by surprise.
This caused Alonso to crash into the rear of Stroll’s AMR22, which in turn sent the Alpine flying into the air and the Canadian losing control of his car, hitting the guards and leaving the race in the same instant.
Despite the fact that the greatest scare was taken by the man from Oviedo, he was able to continue in the race and after a pit stop that left him in the last position of the peloton, he came back and crossed the checkered flag in seventh position, a result that not even the pilot himself I saw it possible at that time.
Stroll’s defensive move was obviously quickly noted by the stewards and both he and a representative of the Silverstone team had to go to testify after the race, as fortunately nothing serious happened, but the outcome of the shocking accident could have been quite different judging by the pictures.
Finally and after listening to the words of the Canadian Aston Martin driver in reference to his incident with the Alpine driver, the FIA stewards made the decision to sanction the Canadian with three positions for the Mexican GP starting grid and two points on your super license.
This is how the FIA explained the sanction to Stroll in Austin through an official statement:
“The Stewards heard from the driver of car 18 (Lance Stroll), the driver of car 14 (Fernando Alonso), representatives of both teams and have reviewed the video evidence.
And it has become clear that the driver of car 18 moved late in reacting to the overtaking attempt of the driver of car 14, moving to the left.
The stewards have therefore determined that the driver of car 18 was at fault for the incident.”
