Red Bull has exceeded the budget limit for the 2021 season and, because of this, the FIA announced that they will have to face a penalty of more than 7 million euros, in addition to a 10% reduction in the time of use of their aerodynamic tests. The transfer must arrive within a period of 30 days, while the punishment regarding the wind tunnel will affect both the 2023 and 2024 cars, since it is something that will last 12 months.
After the publication of the sanctions, the director of the energy drinks team, Christian Horner , called a press conference at the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome in which he explained what the penalty entailed for breaching the cost limit.
His namesake at McLaren, Andreas Seidl , was not in attendance, but gave his take on the situation: “I imagine it was another story from a fairy tale, I’m not interested.”
The German, before the microphones of Sky Sports , expressed the idea that he believes that the FIA did its job in the investigation: “In doing so, it became clear that nine teams agreed with the infringement, and I think that is positive, only that , in my opinion, the penalties are not adjusted to what they should be, I hope that in the future they will be stricter”.
The Red Bull chief also revealed at the press conference that several British teams had exceeded the limit imposed by the federation due to inflation and rising energy prices. From talks earlier in the year, the budget cap was increased by 3.1% , and when asked about it, Seidl said: “There is no reason to exceed the ceiling this campaign.”
“As a team, we have had positive discussions with the FIA and Formula 1, and it was on that subject, so the maximum figure was adjusted accordingly,” acknowledged the McLaren boss. “Those discussions also showed that, thanks to the decisions that were made, that there would be no penalties, and if not, I expected that the corresponding penalties would be applied.”
