F1 – Sainz, on the start: "Russell came like crazy and hit me"

The 2022 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix race began in the worst possible way for Carlos Sainz, and that is that the Spaniard, who was defending a pole position in the highest category of motorsport for the third time in his life, lost the lead even before reaching the first corner. As if that were not enough, George Russell’s Mercedes touched him from behind causing a spin and a puncture, as well as rendering his radiator useless.

The man from Madrid managed to return to the pitlane so that his mechanics could try to repair the car, but once the damage had been assessed, Ferrari preferred to withdraw the car to save the life of its power unit, although everything makes it seem that next weekend in Mexico will face a penalty.

In this way, Sainz added his sixth retirement of the season, seeing how the options of being runner-up in the world eluded him, even Lewis Hamilton, with his second position in the American test, was only four points behind him.

Once the Spaniard returned to the paddock to speak to the media, he preferred not to give his opinion on the FIA stewards’ decision and George Russell’s five-second penalty, but from the way he put it, it is possible that seemed insufficient.

“Surely he deserved a penalty. If he deserved five, ten [seconds] or a stop and go, I’m not going to assess it,” said Ferrari, before explaining that it was a rare incident among the leaders. “I think you’ve never seen these kinds of incidents in the top three because in the top four, the drivers don’t make these kinds of mistakes, it’s very simple.”

Regarding the moment of the start, Carlos Sainz acknowledged that he did not do too well: “I did not have the best of starts, I think Max [Verstappen] had a very good one, because mine compared to his was not so bad” .

“We have seen in many, many years here that the second has a better start than the first for a reason that we still don’t understand,” he said. “And yeah, I was in the middle of a fight with Max, and all of a sudden Russell came like crazy and hit me. He wasn’t even in that fight and he bumped into me, so I don’t think he needs too much of an explanation other than the images”.

“Things have not come out on Sundays, but we have to turn the page and focus on Mexico. There is no other way but to take steps forward and there will be time for these kinds of things not to happen,” concluded the Prancing Horse player from Madrid.
