Ferrari worked differently in the preparation of the two F1-75s for the 2022 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix: the Spanish driver had the complicated task of getting his first pole position, to try to stop the pace of the world leader, Max Verstappen .
The rear wing mounted on Carlos Sainz’s car has a bit more downforce, thinking more about qualifying in the wet. The objective was to put the man from Madrid ahead of the Dutchman to create a kind of “stopper” that would facilitate Charles Leclerc’s comeback from the bottom of the grid.
In the F1-75 of the Monegasque, however, a more unloaded rear wing was approved, with the clear objective of facilitating overtaking on the track. The difference between the two configurations is easily recognizable because Ferrari , in this first part of the 2022 season, has suffered more than its main rival, the Red Bull RB18, with the top speed of its car with the DRS open.
Through aerodynamics, those from Maranello have sought a solution to this problem, introducing a rear wing on Leclerc ‘s car that reduces aerodynamic drag: not so much on the moving part of the flap (DRS) which, when opened, returns neutral, but in the more lateral areas that support the lateral profile of the spoiler.
Rather than having a right-angled edge, the version that has been fitted to Leclerc ‘s car is more rounded, with a small taper at the front, useful for improving top speeds.
In short, the Italian team is making a great effort with the F1-75 to counteract the competitiveness of the RB18 on the straight in a world championship that is still far from decided, despite what has happened in recent races.
At the same time, it is fair to point out that Sainz, after having finished third in the standings behind Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, by having a more loaded rear wing, will be slightly affected during the race, which will be held in the dry, since that these pilots also have a more unloaded rear wing.
