F1 – The reckless and unpunished overtaking of Ocon and Zhou

For several weeks, the International Automobile Federation has been at the center of all attention due to different controversies that have arisen in recent race weekends and, instead of trying to solve it, doubts about the governing body of the Formula 1 seem to be growing as the days go by.

Last weekend, at the 2022 United States Grand Prix, the FIA was once again at the center of the hurricane due to several controversies that, in one way or another, practically all of them were connected to a shocking accident that took place in the back straight of the American track between Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Beyond the double sanction that was imposed on the Canadian driver after he was found guilty of the incident for making a late move and the penalty that the Spaniard received several hours after the race for “driving an unsafe car”, for driving one of his mirrors damaged, which would later fly away when overtaking Kevin Magnussen, the governing body of the highest category of motorsport let slip a reckless and highly punishable action.

At the moment of the impact between Stroll and Alonso, the Aston Martin car was stranded in the middle of the track, while the Alpine went flying before landing and hitting the protections.

At that moment, the peloton was united, since the race had just resumed after a safety car, so many drivers were involved in a totally unexpected way. The vast majority of them slowed down to avoid a multiple collision due to the danger, but as the television cameras revealed, there were other drivers who tried and, in fact, managed to take advantage of that action.

Mick Schumacher was one of the first drivers to pass very close to the Canadian driver’s AMR22 crossed and sideways in the middle of the line, minimizing his speed, but from behind, two other drivers did not do the same and tore off the stickers with two movements very reckless that, in addition, the FIA stewards overlooked.

Esteban Ocon and Guanyu Zhou did not lift their feet at any time despite the hair-raising accident that had just occurred in front of their eyes and double overtook the German Haas F1 Team driver, going over the remains of Alonso’s single-seaters and Stroll, also assuming the risk that another collision in that same area would have entailed.

Obviously, that action did not go unnoticed by the fans, who quickly showed their discontent on social networks for such a reckless action. However, the governing body of Formula 1 did nothing about it, causing further anger among fans.

That, added to the fact that Pierre Gasly was later sanctioned for leaving more than ten cars behind during a Safety Car period, when he was not the only one to do so, and taking into account the penalty given to Fernando Alonso for “driving an unsafe car” that they had previously declared fit, has increased doubts about the FIA at an already critical moment.
