Fabio Quartararo: "It was difficult to opt for Yamaha"

The relationship between Fabio Quartararo and the tuning fork brand has solidified this Thursday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Both the French rider and the official Yamaha garage finally announced the extension of the agreement of the boy from the Côte d’Azur, who will continue to wear the colors of the Japanese garage until 2024.

The road to this decision was led, mainly, by the proposal of a new support in the engineering team in charge of squeezing the maximum potential of the Yamaha M1.

“It has not been an easy decision and we took a little more time to evaluate the whole project,” Fabio Quartararo introduced during the press conference for the Catalan Grand Prix. “Yamaha has put in a lot of effort and brought in a lot of people who know where they need to improve.”

Among the tasks of the engineering team is the search for higher power.

“My first objective is to have the best bike and the best project. Clearly they are going to work on that weak point, and that is what has made me make the decision to stay with Yamaha.”

“To be honest, I feel really good on the bike now. Everyone wants more grip and more speed, but to be realistic the only thing we lack is speed. That’s what has made us take the decision to bring more engineers into the engine area. They will be working in this area.”

Along these lines, the French rider assured that it has not been easy to reach this agreement.

“As you can imagine, I wasn’t just talking to Yamaha. I took all this time to think because, at one point, my mind would go to one side, a week later it would think of another alternative. It was difficult to choose Yamaha The factor of the new engineers and my results, knowing that I couldn’t do more due to lack of power, was what made me decide.”

At the moment, Yamaha faces the ninth of the 20 races that make up the MotoGP sporting calendar, the Catalan Grand Prix. This is a very demanding circuit, but favorable for its regular driver.

Although the level of grip on the Catalan track is low, Fabio Quartararo has already posted three pole positions and two wins in the past.

“Since I was 14 years old, I got pole positions here and I’ve always been fast. I like it and on the bike I’ve always had great speed. I think my style suits this circuit, especially in the last sector, in the last two corners. The strong point of our bike and of my style is precisely that, cornering, although it is difficult to know exactly which corners I go faster”.

“I always feel good at this circuit. I got my first podium here and my first victory in Moto2. There is no reason why we can’t fight for good results. Hopefully we will have better feelings here than Mugello and work better and see if we can have a great pace from FP1”.
