Fernando Alonso works the miracle in Qatar and returns to the podium seven years later

There is still a Formula 1 World Championship . Lewis Hamilton toured the Qatar GP and promises that he will not make things easy for Verstappen in the two races remaining to finish the championship. The great news in the emirate was given by Fernando Alonso , who gave a recital to finish third on the podium after seven years without doing so. Carlos Sainz finished in seventh position.

With exactly one year to go before the Qatar Soccer World Cup starts, Formula 1 passed through this emirate to make noise with the engines of the single-seaters while in the boxes there were personalities of the beautiful game such as the president of FIFA Infantino or a myth like David Beckham , who approached Losail to enjoy his compatriot Lewis Hamilton , who started from pole. And the golden World Cup , which presided over the race along with the prizes for the riders and teams.

With the penalties to Verstappen and Bottas, Fernando Alonso , with soft tires, started from third place, experienced a clean start in which he overtook Gasly on the outside after the first corner. Hamilton held his position and began to take advantage of the Asturian. Verstappen , who started seventh, gained three positions, while Carlos Sainz lost two.

On the fourth lap came a new onslaught from Verstappen , which got rid of Gasly and took third place to stick to the rear wing of Fernando Alonso. It was on the next lap that the Dutchman’s Red Bull spotted the Alpine in the rearview mirror. The war with Hamilton began, although Max was still almost four seconds behind the British. The show was served, as in Brazil, where the one who gave the master class was Mercedes.

Hamilton, straight to victory

But Formula 1 is not only about Hamilton and Verstappen , Fernando Alonso starred in a beautiful battle with Gasly for the podium. The other of ours, Carlos Sainz , had a hard time and could not bear the pressure of Checo Pérez who surpassed him on lap 8. But if anyone was surprising because of how uphill the Qatar GP was, it was Bottas , who lost five places and moving up positions was being very complicated for him.

Little by little Bottas was entering the race and from eleventh place he reached seventh, passing in front of Carlos Sainz. The Finn continued his climb to fight for fourth and third place. Meanwhile, further forward, Fernando Alonso settled in third place, but behind he had the Finn who had been stomping.

Hamilton , for his part, extended his distance with Verstappen and both, under the Qatari night, opted for that change to hard tires. Fernando Alonso also chose that option, who after coming out of the pits lived a beautiful duel with Checo Pérez from which the Mexican emerged victorious. The Asturian and Red Bull were good for Bottas’ tire blowout due to wear, who rushed as much as possible with his tires

Alonso reaches the podium

The good news of Bottas’ puncture was not entirely successful for Fernando Alonso , who lost time compared to a Checo Pérez who, with half the race to go, was slowly seeing himself on the podium at the end of the Qatar GP . Looking at the first two places, the Lewis Hamilton thing was being a walk and Verstappen was hurrying, although he needed to go through the pits and put the means for the last laps of the test.

The entry of the Dutchman allowed Hamilton to do so later and thus ensure the victory practically. With 15 laps remaining, Checo changed wheels and Alonso was third again. It remained to see the Asturian’s plan: enter and return to be fourth or risk until the end. The Mexican had to overcome Stroll, Ocon and Norris to catch up with Magic’s Alpine. Pérez tried it and managed to place himself in fourth place with 6 laps remaining and with a difference of 15 in tire use.

The battle between the two was beautiful and who knows what could happen if there had been more laps. A virtual safety car helped Fernando Alonso , who resisted on the tires and finished the Qatar GP third, achieving the 98th podium of his career and getting back into the box, something he had not achieved since 2014 in Hungary. Hamilton ended up crossing the finish line first and the fastest lap was taken by Verstappen , who finished second.
