Ferrari will have a low downforce solution in Miami

The Maranello outfit has made a strong start to the season in 2022, winning two of the first four races as it prepares to continue its intense battle with Red Bull.

The scale of this challenge was reflected in last weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, when an upgraded RB18 dominated, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez taking their first one-two of the course at Imola.

While Ferrari has so far not introduced any major developments to its F1 car, the team believes there is no rush to do so yet. Therefore, the Italian team will simply make a configuration change in the downforce of the F1-75 at the GP Miami.

Miami ‘s long straights will force teams to run at a lower downforce spec, focusing primarily on top speed.

With Red Bull appearing to have been consistently stronger in that regard this year, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is aware that the time has come to tweak the F1-75 ‘s set-up.

Asked if there would be any major updates for Miami, the Swiss replied: “No, we will not bring the main package here. But still, we will have some new parts.”

“Because Miami is a high-speed track compared to the ones we’ve been to so far, in terms of downforce, we’ll be racing something different.”

“Hopefully, the level of downforce that we bring to Miami, we’re pretty sure it’s going to be efficient. But we also know that Red Bull has a good mid/low downforce package, so they’ll be competitive.”

“It will be a completely new track, a new challenge for all of us, it is very interesting and I am very curious to see what happens there.”

Mattia Binotto also explained that the team will continue to make adjustments to the car to fix the porpoising issues it still suffers from.

“We are still working on the rebound, which as you can still see is quite visible,” he said. “We suffered from it more than Red Bull and there is also some performance potential there that we need to try to unlock.”

One of the big performance differences between Red Bull and Ferrari this year has been top speed. At the beginning of the campaign, the F1-75 was better in acceleration and low/medium speed corners, while the RB18 was faster in high speed corners and at the end of the straight.

However, Binotto believes there has been something of a convergence in the characteristics of both cars, with Red Bull adding more downforce to its car to be quicker in the corners.

Reflecting on the differences, the Italians’ CEO said: “If I look at Jeddah, they were certainly much quicker. If I look at Bahrain, there the DRS effect was important, and the way they managed to catch us on the straight was significant.”

“But then if I look at Australia I think they put a little more downforce on the car and the speed was very similar between the two cars.

“If you look at the rear wings that they have, they definitely increased downforce. And I think when we’re running similar wings, we’re also very evenly matched in terms of speed. So I don’t think there’s a huge difference there.”

“We know we can improve our wings to make them more efficient, but I don’t expect it to be a problem at certain circuits.”

“We as Ferrari will have new mid/low downforce wings in the next few races, when needed. And then it’s just a matter of compromise on what you think is best in terms of not just qualifying lap time. , but in race pace and tire degradation”.

“There have been races where I think our choice was the right one. But I think this is great, the fact that both teams can have different solutions, different setups and options makes every race spectacular.”
