Franco Morbidelli penalized with a long lap on Sunday at Assen 2022

Franco Morbidelli will have to do a long lap during the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday. The reason for this penalty responds to irresponsible driving by the official Yamaha rider.

The Italian-Brazilian kept the pace too slow during the second free practice session in Assen, hampering his rivals on track. The action, which was committed a total of twice on Friday, will hurt the Yamaha rider’s strategy during the last race before the summer break.

Franco Morbidelli hampered Marco Bezzecchi in the first corner and six minutes later, it was Enea Bastianini who grazed him in turn number 13 of the circuit, in one of the fastest sections of the track.

“I left the track at turn 11 and returning to the circuit, I hindered the Enea [Bastianini] trajectory and for that I received a penalty,” Morbidelli justified himself, confirming that he accepted the penalty imposed by the stewards Andrés Somolinos, Freddie Spencer and Raffaele of Fabritiis.

The latter clarified in his decision that Franco Morbidelli had already received a verbal warning for similar maneuvers last week during the German Grand Prix, a fact that probably influenced it.

Author of a modest 18th time this Friday, Franco Morbidelli already sees his chances of a good result vanish this weekend, especially on a Sunday when he needs the points more than ever. Thus, the 2020 world runner-up must accept the sanction and complete his corresponding long lap this Sunday.
