Gasly believes AlphaTauri 'threw overboard' Singapore GP

Pierre Gasly was riding comfortably in the top seven at the Singapore Grand Prix, until it was time to switch to slick tires on a still wet track.

But he was pitted too early by AlphaTauri , when the tarmac was not yet dry enough to ride slicks , and Gasly lost positions. Finally, the Frenchman crossed the finish line in tenth place .

After the race, Gasly said he didn’t understand why AlphaTauri had decided to call him into the pits at the time, as those who stopped later won so much more.

Speaking to the media, Gasly said: “I don’t think we’ve done a good job. We were seventh, ahead of the two Aston Martins. We had it in our hands and we threw it overboard because we decided to pit too early.”

“There was no communication or dialogue, and I don’t really understand why. We played it at a time when it wasn’t necessary. Everyone stayed on the track when we stopped, and four cars overtook us.”

Gasly stated that it was very difficult to accept the final result , after seeing Sebastian Vettel, Lance Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo gain a huge advantage by stopping later. With that strategic error, AlphaTauri gave up its place in the constructors’ championship to Aston Martin.

“Obviously I’m very disappointed for the whole team and for all of us, because we drop to ninth in the championship,” he said.

“Daniel [Ricciardo] was behind us, way behind, [but] he stayed on track, as we should have, and finished fifth.”

“That’s nine important points that we’ve lost. So yeah, I’m sad. And I’m not happy with our performance.”

Gasly said that if the team had asked him about the track conditions at the time the stops were taking place, he would have advised him to stay out.

“It was too soon,” he said. “I don’t understand why we did it. I didn’t talk to them and obviously it’s something we have to look at. They had reasons to do it, but they should have at least told me, and they didn’t.”

“In the position we were in, ahead of your two main rivals, the tarmac is drying out and you know it’s going to be difficult to warm up the tyres… I don’t see the point in taking risks like that. And we ended up giving our position away.”

AlphaTauri ‘s disappointment at the Singapore result was compounded by the accident of Yuki Tsunoda, who went off the track after being fitted with slick tyres.
