A new study carried out by the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in Lund (Sweden) has concluded that frequent use of hair dyes and continuous exposure to them , as in the case of hairdressers or stylists, leads to an increase of carcinogenic chemicals in the blood, linked to bladder cancer.
The researchers wanted to measure the effects of long-term exposure to known carcinogenic aromatic amines in the salon setting from the use of hair dyes. Thus, they evaluated blood samples from 295 hairdressers, as well as 32 regular customers of this service and 60 people who had not used any type of dye for a year .
Examination of the samples revealed that aromatic amine levels did not differ significantly between the three groups. However, higher concentrations of o-toluidines did appear, which are also carcinogenic .
The authors, in their study published in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine , suggest that ingredients in hair dyes and perm products should be tested to see if these products continue to expose the public to carcinogens .
