The last Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton starred in a controversy that did not end that Sunday at Spa-Francorchamps. Quite the contrary, since during the week, the British pilot made a “funny” publication on his social networks.
However, it seems that both, especially the Spanish rider, have come to the Dutch Grand Prix with the intention of cutting to the chase and continuing without any quarrels between them.
Looking back, Alonso called Hamilton an “idiot” and said he only knew how to drive when he started first after his accident on the first lap of the Belgian GP, comments that obviously did not sit well with Mercedes.
However, after the Spa race, the Asturian recognized that those statements had been the result of a moment of heat and that he did not really think about it. Although the British ignored those words and was quite angry about it.
Already in Verstappen’s land, Alonso appeared on the Belgian circuit with the aim of putting an end to the controversy that had haunted him throughout the week and acknowledged that he was willing to personally apologize to Hamilton for his comments.
“Yes, I apologize, I wasn’t thinking about what I said. I don’t think he was to blame [for the crash] at the time either, to be honest after watching the replays, it’s a typical first lap incident, we’re all very close together.”
“No, no, I haven’t yet. But when we’re talking on TV I’m going to go up to him and say I feel like he got it that way.”
However, those apologies did not come at the time that the Alpine driver had said, as Hamilton acknowledged at the end of that same press conference.
“We were right next to each other, but no [he apologized]. And for me… it’s not a big deal. It doesn’t change anything, it really doesn’t affect me in the slightest.”
“And the hat thing, it was just a fun thing. It’s nice to have fun with these things sometimes and I’ll keep doing it.”
“I, personally, am always trying to be a better driver and I also know that there are many people, young and old, and also many small children, who follow me, so it is important for me to take steps forward in terms of the behavior that I’ve got”.
A few hours later and with both already settled in the Belgian paddock, Fernando Alonso ‘s promised apologies became a reality, since the Asturian was the one who visited the Mercedes driver in his own motorhome and both signed peace with a photography that produced a great reaction on social networks, with the famous cap in between.
