Lewis Hamilton spoke during the 2022 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix on Thursday about the category’s involvement in women and that they may one day reach motorsport more, and suggested that the organization could do more to save the W Series, currently facing many financial problems.
The Mercedes driver, always in favor of social causes and equality in all senses of life, pointed out: “With the organization, Formula 1 and Liberty Media doing so well, they didn’t need much to help. We have to do more to encourage young women.
Shortly after the seven-time world champion made those comments, the news came out that the Grand Circus is already working on its own project, which will be on a similar level to Formula 4, and therefore, for younger drivers than in the Wseries.
The new championship will run under the umbrella of the current FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 organisation, and when asked about it, Hamilton said “it’s a step in the right direction, but it’s not about finding a single female pilot”.
“There are thousands of jobs, and very, very few places at the top, especially for women,” explained the member of the German team. “Last night I was at the briefing, and there were about 70 men, two women and two people of color, it’s a very stark contrast, when still after 15 years you still see that it’s exactly the same.”
“So there’s a lot of work to be done, not just supporting and caring for young girls trying to get into careers, we have Ignite, which we’ve launched to try to get 8,000 girls into STEM [science, technology, engineering and math], and in motorsports,” Hamilton said.
The Brit wants there to be more diversity in the paddock, especially among the managers: “Equality at the highest places in Formula 1, we also need more visibility, when you look at all the garages, all the team managers are white men, And there’s only one person of color, and in the mechanics, most of them are men.”
“And if there are any women, they are more in the background. We have to put them more in the foreground, so that the young girls who see us know that they may be here,” said the seven-time world champion.
