Hamilton explains his radio message at the end of the Australian GP

In the closing laps of the F1 race in Melbourne , Lewis Hamilton was beginning to close in on teammate George Russell, who had overtaken him thanks to a well-timed stop during a Safety Car .

The two Mercedes drivers had no pressure from behind, and it seemed that they would play the podium between them, with the doubt of whether the team would let them fight or prefer to avoid risks and keep the positions as they were.

There, Hamilton turned on the radio and commented to his race engineer, Peter Bonnington : “You guys have put me in a really tough position.”

Many quickly interpreted the message as a criticism of the team because Russell had passed him at the stops, or even as a request to at least allow him to fight. But Hamilton wanted to make it clear that in reality his message had nothing to do with changes in position or the impossibility of overtaking his teammate.

In fact, he explained that the comment referred to the fact that he had to slow down to run with open air ahead, because his engine was overheating while doing lap after lap behind his new pit neighbor.

“Basically, I couldn’t compete for position, for the podium, because the car was overheating,” he explained. “So I had to slow down, slow down, stay behind.”

Despite finishing behind Russell, who is now second in the drivers’ championship, Hamilton considered Australia a great result for Mercedes, as he maintains that they were 1.2 seconds behind on Friday and could have been third and fourth on Sunday.

Asked to assess what Valtteri Bottas’ young replacement was doing, Hamilton said: “It’s unbelievable. He’s done an unbelievable job. He did an unbelievable job today, he had great pace. He’s been very solid in these first three races. And he’s working, getting very involved, doing an amazing job.”

For his part, he celebrated having taken points out of a difficult period, and having improved compared to a Saudi Arabian GP in which he had not shown his best version: “Although we have not improved the car in those three races, I think we have really We got the most out of what we could in terms of points. I think for my part I let the team down in the last race and didn’t get a lot of points, but to come out of here with this result is great.”
