After finishing fourth in a race in which he suffered a lot of back pain due to the porpoising of his Mercedes, the fans awarded Lewis Hamilton with the symbolic title of ‘Driver of the day’ in Baku.
The seven-time world champion had a lackluster start to the race, holding his position before the first retirements and failing, without enjoying great top speed, to overtake Pierre Gasly. During his first pit stop, under Virtual Safety Car , he lost time behind George Russell and faced with a slow pitstop, he got back on track behind Sebastian Vettel.
Hamilton then upped the pace despite back pain to climb back into the top four, taking advantage of a final VSC to gain a clear tire lead over Gasly and pass the Frenchman from AlphaTauri to finish more than 25sec off his teammate (who was not precisely among the most voted by the fans in the Azerbaijan GP).
Azerbaijan GP Driver of the Day voting results:
Lewis Hamilton – 14.8%
Max Verstappen – 13.6%
Sebastian Vettel – 13.1%
Sergio Perez – 10%
Pierre Gasly – 9.3%
