Hamilton sorry "for F1 fans" if Verstappen wins title

Should Max Verstappen win this weekend in Singapore and set the fastest lap, he will claim his second consecutive world championship if Charles Leclerc finishes ninth or worse and his teammate Sergio Perez finishes fifth or worse.

Review here all Verstappen’s options to win the title in Singapore.

If the Dutchman, who currently holds a 116-point lead over the Monegasque, finishes second or worse, his crowning will have to wait until the Japanese GP.

Should Max Verstappen win the title this weekend, he will equal Michael Schumacher, who holds the world championship record with five races remaining in 2022.

After Lewis Hamilton admitted that some of his titles, won early, had been negative for the show, he explained that “I would feel sorry for the fans” if Verstappen takes the championship so soon.

Speaking ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix on Thursday, Hamilton said: “From my point of view, I’m not thinking much about it (Verstappen’s second title).”

“But yeah, I feel sorry for the fans. For everyone, and even for ourselves last year, when the fights come alive to the end, it’s more intense and exciting.”

“It’s never positive that the season ends early. Even when I’ve been the main character. For you, as a driver, it’s great. But for the sport itself, it’s not good.”

“I am very grateful to have lived moments like in 2008, where everything was decided in the last 17 seconds and, obviously, last year, it was more or less the same.”

Speaking about how he sees the rest of the season on a personal note after finding his way in the Mercedes W13 after a very difficult start, Hamilton explained: “I’m still enjoying the challenge and I’m proud of the work and progress the Mercedes W13 has made. equipment”.

“Seeing how hard everyone works within a team is the most inspiring thing for me.”

“They go to the circuit, they fly on Sunday night, they are in the office on Monday, working to try to find solutions.”

“It’s really impressive, because this season has been tough. I know that everyone is looking forward to the time to rest,” concluded the Briton.
