Sergio Pérez is experiencing one of the most glorious days of his sports career after achieving a historic victory at the Monaco Grand Prix this Sunday, crowning a weekend where he was a clear contender since Friday when the cars took to the track for the first time .
This result comes halfway through a season in which Pérez has consistently stayed closer to teammate Max Verstappen, and a week after he could have won the Spanish Grand Prix had it not been for a team order in Dutch benefit.
The performance of “Checo” suggests that he has earned continuity at Red Bull for 2023, and Christian Horner , team principal, spoke about it during the Monaco weekend before the race.
“It just has to keep going,” Horner said of Perez’s renewal. “He is doing a fantastic job at the moment and we are very happy with him. He has driven very well so far this year. He had a fantastic pole position in Jeddah and has had some great races,” said the British manager.
“Compared to last season, the gap between him and Max has narrowed a lot. Also, he is a true team driver, in my opinion the best there is in Formula 1 at the moment. If he keeps doing what he is doing , conversations should be very simple.”
However, and although the information so far was that nothing was finalized yet, a comment by Pérez to Horner after the podium in Monaco generated some rumours.
“I probably signed too early,” the Guadalajara driver told the Red Bull boss with a laugh.
Later, in the press conference, Pérez was asked about it and, strangely enough, he said that “I was referring to the champagne”, to which Verstappen added: “I think what you have done today can help, just a little!” .
Whether or not Checo Pérez has already signed with Red Bull , the truth is that the Mexican driver’s results, if they do not change drastically, guarantee that he can continue next season wearing the colors of the Milton Keynes team.
