Despite the fact that the public belief is based on the fact that if one has a hangover, it is more normal that it takes time to drink again (at least until the discomfort due to the excesses of the previous night is over), a new study contradicts this statement . Hangovers do not affect how long it takes until we want to drink alcohol again. The work has been published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research .
Is the suffering generated by the hangover (with the headache, dizziness, digestive disorders …) a reason to put off the next time you want to have a drink? That was the starting point of the study carried out by researchers from the University of Missouri (USA).
The researchers conducted a study with 386 people (196 men, 190 women) who used to drink frequently. All of them were followed for 21 days to examine their drinking habits, as well as other types of substances. During this period of time , 2,276 episodes of consumption were obtained, 463 of them accompanied by a subsequent hangover . For the authors, it is surprising that the assessment of when they would drink again was similar whether they were hungover at the time or not.
Thus, the results concluded that hangovers seem to have a very moderate effect on the next drink, mainly due to the fact that the pain of the hangover is temporary and the effects that occur while drinking are pleasant enough to consider the hangover a little annoyance.
