Hill calls for punishment of Piquet for his racist comments

The F1 paddock has reacted by showing its support for Hamilton in the last 24 hours after an interview with Nelson Piquet came to light in which he used a racist comment in reference to the Mercedes driver.

Both F1 and the FIA issued statements rejecting Piquet’s comments, while Lewis Hamilton said it was “time to act” to change “archaic mentalities” in the series.

Piquet has yet to publicly apologize to Hamilton, with many calling for the Brazilian to be barred from the F1 paddock and action taken.

Former Williams, Arrows and Jordan driver Hill , now a commentator on Sky Sports F1 , said during a media briefing on Wednesday morning that he didn’t think Piquet “would be very welcome if he showed up” at a race. .

“I’ve always felt that Nelson was something that was hard to like at first, and I really didn’t like it,” Damon Hill said.

“This is already out of place. Even taking into account possible misunderstandings in the language difference between the Brazilian term and here, it is certainly something that calls for an apology.”

“But I’m not sure what kind of apology would be enough. It’s very sad, really.

Damon Hill

“Poor Lewis for having to put up with that constantly. It has ruined his experience as a Formula 1 driver, perhaps more than we will ever understand.”

Asked by Motorsport.com about the need for F1 and the FIA to take action, Hill drew comparisons to Red Bull’s swift decision to terminate test and reserve driver Juri Vips’ contract following a racist slur.

“This was a case where there was clear evidence that something was said and done,” Hill said, referring to Piquet’s comment.

“There is also the case of Juri Vips, swift action has been taken against him. We have to make sure the sport is not just nodding in the direction of political correctness. It has to be absolutely clear.”

“For a long time, I’ve wanted sport to stand up and make it very clear that it stands for certain values. But the counter argument was that there couldn’t be politics. That was their answer, that we’re not a political organization, we couldn’t.”

“But this is not politics. This is about human values. And surely a sport should be about those things.”
