Horner doubted Jos Verstappen: "I had heard horrible stories"

Jos has helped and accompanied his son, Max Verstappen, from his early beginnings in karting until his arrival in Formula 1 , and the fact is that the former Dutch driver has been one of the usual faces in the paddock and in the garage, first Toro Rosso and then Red Bull .

The father of the current world champion, who played 107 grand prix in the highest category between 1994 and 2003 , gives his opinions without leaving anyone indifferent, either in the media or in a personal space that he has on his son’s website , and he doesn’t hesitate to criticize Red Bull if he feels he has to.

A very clear example this season occurred after Sergio Pérez’s victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, and it is that Jos Verstappen accused the Milton Keynes team of “prioritizing” the Mexican driver over the Dutch.

When team principal Christian Horner was asked in an interview with Sky F1 if it was father and son who make the decisions at Red Bull, the Briton unsurprisingly clarified that this is not the case: “No, no. We have a contract with Max [Verstappen]”.

Horner added that he had doubts about Jos Verstappen because of the stories that had reached his ears, but he was in charge of highlighting the figure of the father of the current Formula 1 world champion: “I had heard horrible stories about him before he came to the team, but I have to say it has been very valuable.”

“He has never caused any problems within the team. He expresses his opinions in a blog, which may not have been very helpful, but I have to say that, for a father in motorsport, it has been perfect,” said the boss. from Red Bull.

Regarding the father-son relationship between the Verstappens, Horner commented: “There is great respect between them. Max has grown up, and Jos is going to fewer and fewer races. It is part of Max’s evolution as a person as well.”

Finally, the head of the energy drinks group spoke about the confidence that Max Verstappen shows this year, both on and off the track: “I think he is aware that he has that world championship. He feels comfortable with himself , he feels like this with the comfortable team, he trusts us and feels that everyone supports him”.

“He has the number 1 on the car, and he loves to race. He has no desire for fame, he walks away from it, he is a very reserved boy, but he loves to drive,” he continued. “And if he’s not driving a Formula 1 car, he’s driving online with his friends, he loves to drive.”
