Pecco Bagnaia could win the title of MotoGP world champion this weekend at the Malaysian Grand Prix. As well as being his first championship in the premier class, it would also be the first accolade for Ducati in many years . But how many drivers’ titles does Ducati have to its credit?
The answer is short: one. Only Casey Stoner was able to be crowned world champion with those from Borgo Panigale, in the 2007 season. A rare bird in the trajectory of the Italian brand in the championship, since neither Stoner himself nor other names that came later, such as Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden or Andrea Dovizioso were able to repeat the feat.
Although there is only one gold in their showcases , they did hit the post on several occasions . Loris Capirossi concluded the 2006 season in third position, Stoner was runner-up in 2008, Andrea Dovizioso added three consecutive second places (2017, 2018 and 2019) and Pecco Bagnaia himself was on the verge of the crown in 2021.
They did have a bit more luck in the teams category , being champions in 2007, 2021 and 2022. They have also been successful in the constructors table, with four titles: 2007, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Thus, in the event that Pecco Bagnaia manages to close the drivers’ title in Malaysia (or, in the worst case, in Valencia), he would give the transalpine house the second title in its history .
