How many Olympic sports are there?

For some time now, every four years , the greatest athletes from around the world come together to compete against each other in a colossal event that seeks to highlight the amazing abilities of these modern Hercules and promote values such as those of competition and brotherhood . For a long time, every four years, the Olympic Games take place.

Inherited from the Greek tradition, which was held between 776 BC and 393 AD , Olympic competition resurfaced after the founding of the International Olympic Committee at the wish of Baron de Coubertin in 1894 . Two years later, Athens was the site of the first Olympics of the modern era in which 245 athletes participated. Since then, the competition has grown in number and professionalism; although they were still an event that fit into a social reality, and as such had its ups and downs depending on the situation in which they developed. For example, until 1900 women were not allowed to compete ; and during the First and Second World War they were not celebrated . The Cold War also took its toll on the Olympics, suffering two boycotts from the respective superpowers and living the horror of the 1972 Munich massacre .

The characteristics of each edition have changed according to the needs of each moment, and that includes the number of sports and the disciplines of each that are disputed. For example, 28 sports with 37 different disciplines participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games : athletics, badminton, basketball, handball, boxing, BMX, road cycling, track cycling, swimming, synchronized swimming, fencing, soccer, artistic gymnastics, Rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, weightlifting, horse riding, hockey, judo, wrestling, mountain biking, pentathlon, canoeing, rowing, softball, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, sanshou, olympic shooting, trampoline, triathlon, sailing, volleyball, beach volleyball and water polo. At the 2016 Rio Olympics , the number of sports remained at 28, but the disciplines rose to 41 and the total number of competitions was 306 .

Within each sport, not all are divided in the same way or in the same categories. The triathlon only celebrates two tests (male and female), while the other modalities are counted by the dozens . In this case, the so-called ‘ three great Olympic sports ‘ stand out above all: athletics, swimming and gymnastics. In these, some modalities are so different from each other that they are practically different sports , as can happen in the athletic events of shot put and the marathon. There are also many sports in which, despite being the same modality, the categories are distributed according to weight, such as in fighting sports such as boxing, weightlifting, judo or taekwondo. The last major division is that of national team sports, in which each team has a large number of participants .
