The sum of all protected natural areas on the planet covers an area equivalent in size to Russia, according to a new study released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Specifically, the number of protected areas has increased in recent years to occupy 12.7% of the surface of the mainland . And the United Nations has announced that its goal is for the protected territory to grow by 2020 to 17%, which means turning at least another 6 million square kilometers into a nature reserve, an area equivalent to twice that of Argentina.
