The Grove outfit decided to loan out young Alpine driver Oscar Piastri for the coming season as a replacement for Nicholas Latifi.
However, his own team’s junior, Sargeant , is making strides forward in Formula 2, winning the feature races in Great Britain and Austria, as well as finishing second in Baku .
The American lost ground with a frustrating weekend in France after taking his second pole of the season, but remains third in the championship, 55 points behind Felipe Drugovich.
If he were to win the title, Sargeant would not be able to continue in the sport in 2023, leaving Williams with the obligation to find him a new role.
“It would be a big headache, wouldn’t it?” Capito said when asked about Sargeant’s prospects.
“I’ve had worse. Of course we’re impressed, it’s his first season in F2. We haven’t put any pressure on him. So he’s got time to develop, and we’ve been impressed with how quickly he’s done with the car, with the tire management and with the results”.
“The way he got pole position in France was really impressive. He will be in an F1 car in the future, I am absolutely convinced.”
Logan Sargeant, Carlin
Capito stressed that it was too early to make plans for Logan Sargeant.
“For example, he needs the Superlicense points. And for that he has to finish in the top five of the championship. At the moment, it looks good.”
“But you know, everything can always go wrong very quickly. So it’s quite difficult to make decisions early on an F2 driver as long as the season is not over. So that’s part of the decision-making of course.”
Williams has already used one of his rookie FP1 sessions this year, when Nyck de Vries contested Free Practice 1 in Spain, and Capito indicated that Sargeant has already earned the other place.
“I think it would be a no-brainer. We haven’t announced it yet. Our young driver academy is doing very well. We’ve had three good results recently. Logan has won two of the last three races and taken pole in France, so I think He deserves to get in the car.”
Capito also indicated that Williams would be willing to field a driver on loan from another team – such as Oscar Piastri – but only if it was the best option.
“I think if it was the best for us, then we would consider it. If it’s not the best, if we have another better solution, we’ll go for the best solution.”
“I think we have several options. And we’re thinking about those as well. And ultimately we’ll go for what we think is best for the team. But it’s too early to go into details, because we’re not there yet.”
