The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) is working under new income guidelines this year, making more homes eligible for energy assistance. This means Milwaukee families with incomes at or below 60% of the state median income – $ 51,155 for a family of four during the 2017-2018 heating season – may qualify for energy assistance to help pay their bills. of energy.

Heating assistance
WHEAP assistance offers a one-time payment during the heating season (October 1 – May 15). Financing pays for a portion of heating costs (usually directly to the energy provider), but is not intended to cover the full cost of heating a residence.
Electric assistance
In some cases, homes may qualify for unheated electric assistance to further cover energy costs. Again, these funds are not intended to cover the total electricity bill for the home. This is also a one-time benefit payment during the heating season (October 1 – May 15).
Oven assistance
If a furnace or furnace breaks down during the heating season, it could receive funds for necessary repairs.
Qualification
The rating for all energy assistance is not based on whether someone is behind on their energy bills or rents or owns your home. The benefit amount is determined by factors such as household income, annual energy use, household size, and type of housing unit.
Applicants must bring the following items to energy assistance agencies to determine eligibility:
- Proof of income for all household members over the age of 18 during the previous three months
- Social Security Cards for Everyone in the Household
- Current energy bill
Note: If the applicant is a tenant and heat is included, a rental certificate or a statement from the landlord confirming that heat is included in the rent payments.
