How to bathe your baby: a practical step-by-step guide

Bathing is one of the most special moments to enjoy with your baby. In fact, it is often the preferred time of day for most parents. But it is normal at first to feel fearful and insecure when bathing your newborn.

This is a practical guide to bathing your baby , which we hope will serve new parents or those who will soon be to enjoy this special moment with their son or daughter.

  • Condition the bathroom to a suitable temperature , especially if it is cold. In those cases, around 24 degrees is a suitable temperature so that the baby does not get cold.

  • Have everything you need ready. You do not have to leave the child alone for a moment, so we will have to leave everything at hand to avoid having to leave the bathroom. Towel or cape, specific soap, sponge, clean diaper, cream for the butt and change of clothes.

  • Check the water temperature with a bath thermometer or with the inside of your wrist or the back of your hand. The water should not be cold or burn, approximately the ideal temperature is between 34-37 degrees Celsius.

  • Undress the baby and clean the diaper area before gently placing him in the bathtub. Take care that you keep his head well supported. Small bathtubs or adapters are ideal for the first few months. If you do the bath alone, place one arm behind his back so that the baby rests his head on his forearm, supporting him by the armpit and shoulder. The baby is semi-incorporated and well secured.

  • With your free hand, start washing from top to bottom , starting with the head and ending with the genitals (here we remind you of how to take care of the vulva and the penis). Pay attention to the areas that must be checked, especially because they tend to accumulate dirt, sweat …: the neck and the skin area with folds (armpits, thighs, groin …).

  • Use a neutral soap for the baby’s delicate skin . You probably do not have too much hair to have to use shampoo, remember that not all cosmetics are suitable for your skin and lotions, shampoos and powders are not recommended.

  • After bathing, dry the baby’s entire body very well, especially between the folds, without rubbing, preferably with cotton towels.

  • Put the diaper on and dress the baby before he gets cold. It is already clean.

The bath itself is over, but we can “spice it up” with music, songs, water toys, a massage to make the moment more relaxing … Each baby takes the first baths in a way, but you’ll see how it is not complicated and in the end you get a taste for it, it may even be difficult to get them out of the bathtub!

We hope that this practical step-by-step guide for baby bathing will be useful for you and that you enjoy the moment with your little ones.

One of the most transcendental decisions that are made in the incipient role of father and mother, when the baby is still in the womb, is deciding the name of your son or daughter.
