How to build a koi fish pond

Koi fish are beautiful, and in the right conditions, they can live for many years. If you have a home garden maybe you could build a koi fish pond. It may seem complicated but with a little planning and patience it won’t take long. You will first need to plan the size and depth of the pond. Next, you will need to dig the hole and cover it with a pond liner. In addition, it is essential that you install a filtration system to keep your fish happy and healthy.

Choose the right size and depth

At least your pond should be 3.7 meters long by 3 meters wide. This size is ideal for a koi pond in your backyard or home garden. A pond of this size can accommodate approximately ten adult fish. This way, they will be able to swim calmly and the pond will not be crowded.

Also, the width of the pond should not exceed 4 meters, otherwise it could be difficult to catch the fish with a net. In terms of depth, the ideal size is 90 centimeters to 1 meter.

Find the right place and start building

You will have to make sure that the site you are going to choose is accessible and you can easily carry all the materials. Some people prefer to have it visible, while other people prefer to walk to get to it. Think about it before you get down to work!

Once you have chosen the place, you will have to clean the area in depth and trace the shape of the pond on the ground. You can use string or paint to make sure you are happy with the size and location of the pond.

Next, you will have to dig the hole using the measurements that you have previously planned. Once you’ve made the hole, you will need to cover the pond with a sturdy plastic or rubber liner. In addition, it is important that you remove any sharp stones that could damage the coating when laying it.

After this step, you will have to place stones around the edge of the pond. Use large stones to completely cover the siding that is level with the surface. Afterwards, you will have to dig a ridge around the stones to prevent rainwater and dirt from reaching the pond water.

Fill the pond with water and install a filtration system

You can use a hose to fill the pond. If your water is not fresh or spring water, use a charcoal filter to remove the chlorine. Remember that chlorinated water is toxic to fish like koi.

Another aspect that you should take into account is both the pH and the temperature of the pond. Koi fish can survive between 1 and 32 degrees Celsius, although their ideal temperature is 18 degrees. If necessary, use a water heater.

Install a filtration system

It is imperative that you install a filtration system, as this keeps the pond clean and the water quality high so that the fish remain healthy. You can place the filter system box right next to the koi pond. Sink it slightly into the ground and follow the installation instructions. You should also place an aerator in the pond so that the water keeps moving at all times. Now you are all set to introduce your koi fish to your new pond!
