Richard J. Durbin, Democrat, is the top senator representing the state of Illinois. Durbin was first elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, replacing former Illinois Senator Paul Simon, and has been reelected every six years since.

Since 2005, he also served as a Democratic whip, the party’s second leading position in the Senate after the Democratic leader, either in the majority or in the minority. Durbin is a member of the Senate Appropriations, Judiciary and Rules committees and is the senior Democratic member of the Appropriations Committee Defense Subcommittee and the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights Judicial Committee Subcommittee.
Education and political history
Durbin was first elected to the US House of Representatives from the former 20th US Congressional District, which included Springfield, in 1982 and served there until he was elected to the US Senate.
Durbin has a law degree from Georgetown University and practiced law in Springfield before being elected to the House in 1982.
