Dressing a newborn baby is a task that must be done with the utmost dedication. Whether we do it after the bath or when changing the diaper, it is a very special moment of contact with the baby, ideal for giving him a massage or pampering him.
However, what should be a pleasant moment sometimes turns out to be the opposite, since most babies do not find it much fun to be undressed. Many cry from the stress caused by being manipulated into dressing them. They hate having a naked torso and suffer a certain sense of insecurity when finding themselves without clothes. They are complaining and restless.
So that the time to dress them is not a suffering for the baby or for the person who does it, we must take into account the following tips :
- To dress it, the baby must be lying on his back on a firm but not hard or cold surface. Try to use a mat so that it is comfortable, if it is plastic it is preferable to cover it with a towel that we do not mind getting stained. Of course, the little one should not be left for a second just on the changing table.
- Have everything at hand: speed is essential. We cannot leave the baby unattended and getting cold while we go to look for the clothes. The change of clothes must be prepared before you begin to undress the baby.
- Handle it gently. Do not turn it over abruptly, or shake it to put the clothes on. The movements must be safe and always bear in mind that the tiny baby is not yet able to support his head.
- The baby hates having his face covered. For this reason, when placing or taking off the clothes by the head, stretch the neck of the garment and place it with one hand while with the other we hold its head.
- Placing the sleeves tends to complicate us until we get the hang of it. But the technique is very simple: instead of putting the arm on the sleeve, we have to place the sleeve on the arm. That is to say, pass our hand upside down through the sleeve, take the baby’s fist and make it go through the sleeve. Never pull or push their arms.
- It is very common to skip some of the automatic closures. To avoid this, you have to start fastening from the ankles upwards, first one leg and then the other.
Ambient temperature
We must prevent the baby from getting cold when we dress it. Babies still do not properly regulate body temperature, so it is dangerous for them to lose heat. If the environment cools, they must use energy to produce heat.
The room temperature should be comfortable, warm but not hot. A temperature that favors relaxation. The ideal is around 24 degrees .
On the other hand, excess heat is not good either, so it is important not to cover too much.

- It must be loose, allowing freedom of movement
- They should be cotton garments with natural fibers to minimize irritations and allergies.
- Avoid synthetic fabrics and wool.
- Do not dress your baby in clothes with chains or ribbons and never put safety pins on him.

- Choose tops with slits at the shoulders, so you can easily pull them over your head.
- Choose clothes that do not shed hair.
- Do not wash the baby’s clothes with strong detergents or use fabric softener, as they can cause an allergic reaction or skin irritation.
- Avoid zippers at the waist, elastic waists are preferable.
- When they are newborns, choose rompers and pajamas with feet and better onesies than T-shirts.
- Cut labels, especially those on underwear.
