A newborn baby seems so fragile that many mothers and fathers, especially new ones, are afraid to hold them.
It is common that they do not know how to handle such a small and delicate baby, they are afraid of harming them or that they could slip through their hands. Therefore, special care must be taken when doing it.
Instinct will know how to give us a good hand when the time comes, but it is still important to take into account some recommendations on how to hold a newborn baby in your arms.
How to hold the newborn baby
- Catch it always holding your back and head . Your neck is not yet capable of supporting your head and will not be able to support your head for the first three months.
- With one hand you should support the back and with the other the head so that it does not tilt or go forward or backward. They are so small that even with the same hand that you hold his back, you can also support his head by placing the palm of your hand on the baby’s upper back and holding his head with your fingers. With the other hand you hold it by the bum and bring it closer to your body.
- Once you have picked it up, support the baby’s entire body on one of your arms, placing the head in the crook of the elbow while you continue to hold it under the back with the other hand. When you have acquired practice, you can hold it with one arm.
- Try to always bring it closer to your body , it will feel safer and more clothed.
- It is important to act delicately but at the same time safely . We want the baby to feel safe in our arms and we must give him confidence.
- Do not pick it up with dirty or cold hands or allow others to do so.
- Before lifting him from the crib or taking him from the arms of another person, first approach him by speaking softly and giving him caresses.
- When you go to bed, lean over the crib as much as possible without detaching it from your body until the last moment and without ceasing to support its back and head . First you have to support the bum, then the rest of the body and finally the head. Don’t take your hand off his head until he’s fully down.
