If you live with a cat (especially if it is a puppy whose teeth are growing) you will know that they bite everything they find around them and that they feel a special devotion to cables. And, although it may even be cuddly at first, this poses a great risk to your pet. Your furry friend could suffer an electric shock or suffocate, so you should take steps to avoid this. Great care!
Find out where the dangers are
All electrical cords that are level with your cat are a potential hazard, as are electrical appliances that your kitten can reach. Therefore, you should be very careful with the cables of the electrical appliances, the cables of the computer equipment or those cables that are used temporarily (such as the lights of the Christmas tree). You should also keep an eye on the areas that you do not reach but your kitty does, such as behind the fridge, freezer or television.
Try to hide the cables
If you can, move furniture around to hide cables that dangle or tend to move. Remember that cats can sneak into very small spaces and move objects that are not well secured, so it is best to hide most of the cables. Tidy up all your electronic devices and keep those you don’t need in a safe place.
You should also store chargers in boxes or drawers, as these cables tend to be very attractive to cats.
Distract your cat with toys or catnip
Your cat may chew on the wires because he is bored or wants to play. Therefore, you should distract your cat with rubber toys that he can chew on or cardboard boxes. You could also give your pet new toys to entertain himself with, although you should avoid those that have strings or threads so that he does not associate them with the cables.
Another option is catnip, as many cats feel the urge to chew on grass. Without the grass, the closest thing is the ropes, cables or wires. Catnip can be found in pet stores and online platforms. Also, buying oat and wheat seeds you can grow it yourself in a pot. Your cat is sure to go to the grass and forget about the cables!
