How to train a disobedient dog

Some dogs are very disobedient or have negative behaviors such as biting, jumping on furniture, or barking at strangers. If you have a disobedient pet, you will know that it is very frustrating to try to control it, although there is the possibility of modifying its behavior. It is essential that you go to your vet for advice and that you seek canine obedience classes to improve their behavior in the long term.

Identify negative behaviors

Not all dogs disobey in the same way, so it is important to find out how and in what situations he acts rebelliously. Does your dog attack guests or bark constantly? You should write down in a notebook every time your dog behaves in a disobedient manner, to later review any behavior patterns.

You should also watch for any triggers that cause these behaviors, such as the doorbell. When you go to the vet or a canine professional they may be able to help you redirect or avoid these triggers.

Set clear rules

You should put some limits inside the home so that both you and your pet are more calm and comfortable. In addition, it is important that all family members are consistent and follow the rules. Otherwise, your pet will end up more confused, causing more frustration and disobedience.

Use positive reinforcement

This method of training involves rewarding your dog’s good deeds and paying little or no attention to bad behaviors. You can reward your pet by giving him healthy snacks or with lots of pampering.

After your dog does something good or obeys you, you will need to immediately reward him for understanding the message (and repeating the good deed). It is also a good idea to reward your dog when he is calm.

Ignore bad behaviors

Some dogs misbehave to get attention, even if this attention is negative. To remedy this type of behavior, you will need to spend more quality time with your pet. That is, playing, walking in the mountains or training.

However, if your dog misbehaves, it is best not to pay attention to him. Remember that scolding him means paying attention to him, and he may misinterpret it as positive reinforcement (since he has gotten what he wanted). Therefore, it is better that you walk away and ignore it.
