How to travel from Rome airport to central train station How to get to Roma Termini from Fiumicino airport

Rome’s main international airport, sometimes known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO), is 26 kilometers (16 miles) from Rome. The airport tends to be referred to by its old name: Fiumicino, after the nearest city.

There are buses and trains between the airport and the train station, but most take the express train called Leonardo Express. The Express is predictable and even works during strikes, although a bus can be substituted for the train.

Non-stop train between Rome Fiumicino airport and Termini train station

The express train will take you from Rome’s main international airport, Fiumicino, to Rome’s Termini central train station. The cost as of 2019 is € 14 per person and the 37-kilometer trip takes about 32 minutes.

A Leonardo Express train leaves every half hour in each direction from six in the morning until 11 at night.

From Roma Termini: Trains to the airport start at 5:35 am, with trains leaving every half hour. The last train of the day leaves at 22.35 (10:35 pm)

From Rome Fiumicino International Airport: Trains to Termini Station start at 6:23 am, with trains leaving every half hour. The last train of the day leaves at 23:23 (11:23 pm).

At Termini station, the Leonardo Express is located on runways 23 and 24 (subject to change). Be aware that any offer to help you buy tickets or carry your bags can create a demand for money on your part.

Where to buy tickets in Roma Termini

If you do not want to buy online, tickets can be purchased at the main windows, as well as from the automatic ticket machines and news / tobacco shops in the lobby of Termini station.

Validate your tickets before boarding the train using the machines close to the track, called obliteratrici in Italian.

Buying tickets at the airport

After collecting your luggage, follow the signs to Stazione FS / Railway Station . You will have to climb 2 floors to find it. But, it is conveniently located inside the airport.

Buy a “Per Termini” ticket at the FS ticket counter or at one of the machines at the station. A ticket costs € 14. You must validate your ticket by inserting it into the validation machine before entering the train.

Roma Termini train station is the main interchange hub serving all transport services from Florence / Bologna / Milan / Venice and Naples / Salerno) to the train station.

Alternatives to the train service from Fiumicino to central Rome

Of course, you can take a taxi to the center of Rome using the taxi rank in front of the Fiumicino airport. Use only authorized taxis (white metered vehicles) available in the arrivals areas of each terminal. A taxi ride to Rome should cost around 48 euros. There is a flat rate for up to four people and their luggage.

There are also buses from the airport. The train is faster, but it is more expensive. The bus also offers a short panoramic tour of some of the main sights in the city (at least you will pass the Colosseum).

Also available is a Rome airport shuttle service, a van service that can take you to your hotel or private home in Rome.
