Hydrochloric acid leaked: mother and son cause a major alarm

They complained of being unwell in their car – and triggered a large fire service in Jever in East Frisia. The vehicle was badly damaged by the acid.

Jever – By transporting highly concentrated hydrochloric acid in their car, an 87-year-old woman and her son unknowingly triggered a large-scale fire brigade in Friesland.

After cleaning up their garage on Wednesday, they wanted to dispose of containers with paint, cleaners, oils and other unknown substances in a landfill, the police said. Hydrochloric acid leaked out, which led to nausea, malaise and coughing in the 56-year-old man and his mother. So they had to break off their trip in Jever.

After the fire brigade arrived with a dangerous goods train, a specialist company was able to dispose of the pollutants. The mother and her son from Friesland got away with the horror and did not need medical treatment. The car that was totaled had to be towed away. A total of 60 helpers from the volunteer fire brigade, the rescue service and the police were on duty. dpa
