Sexuality is a fundamental aspect in the life of a human being. Sex provides well-being, health and self-esteem and its enjoyment is not always related to emotional maturity . In fact, the younger at heart you feel, the better sex you enjoy. This is stated by a study from the University of Waterloo published in the Journal of Sex Research , which analyzed the sexual habits and concepts about age and sexuality of a group of 1,170 adults of different sexual orientations between 40 and 70 years during a decade.
The study concludes that people who felt emotionally closer to their lowest chronological age scored their sexual relationships in terms of quality, frequency and interest. “What was clear from the data is that feeling younger had a huge impact on how people felt about the quality of their sex lives and how interested they were in having sex,” in the words of study leader Steven Mock. “For middle-aged people, feeling young is what makes the difference in the bedroom.”
There are many factors that can influence a person’s perception of sexuality . The attitudes that people adopt about sexuality affect the way they live experiences, behavior and even ideas about health regarding sex. In the study, middle-aged and older people who had the most sexual dysfunction also had the most negative beliefs about late sexuality.
In contrast, “the better the attitudes towards the concept of getting older , the higher the interest, participation and appreciation of the quality of sex.” In addition, it was observed that positive attitudes regarding age cushioned the negative effect of pre-established beliefs on life and sexual satisfaction.
