Iker Lecuona: "Two or three MotoGP riders will come to WSBK in 2023"

After ending his journey in MotoGP, the rider from Valencia is delighted with his new journey on a Superbike.

After a great debut in the discipline, Iker Lecuona said goodbye to Misano with very good feelings, because, despite its great differences with respect to MotoGP -especially in terms of top speed and development- the passage from one championship to another has made dent in the Spanish pilot.

Another driving style, less pressure and more margin for error are the conditions that dazzled Lecuona in his transition from one championship to another. So much so, that the Valencian rider does not hesitate to choose WSBK as his discipline.

“Different lines are used when riding the bike, and also the impression you have when riding them is different. With a Superbike, you are always on the side and you play much more with the bike. In MotoGP you have to ride perfectly, honestly, here I enjoy much more.”

“Even in MotoGP I was fast but I enjoy it more here. You can’t compare a GT car with an F1 and it’s the same here,” the Spaniard insisted on GPOne .

These, among other reasons, could attract the attention of MotoGP riders. According to Lecuona , it is a matter of time before the protagonists of the premier class bet on street bikes.

“From the first moment I knew that, although it is not at the level of MotoGP, the championship has at least three very strong riders and a lot of young people like Locatelli, Rinaldi, my teammate Xavi Vierge… the level today [in WSBK] is higher than never”.

“Lately more and more riders from different championships are trying their luck in Superbike and the bar will be raised for obvious reasons. Some MotoGP riders are thinking of coming here, but even in this championship a lot of the places are closed, there are not many free places. Surely at least two or three riders, from MotoGP or Moto2, will come here in 2023.”

Regarding Repsol’s recent and controversial position regarding aerodynamics and electronics, Lecuona agrees.

“I’ve said it many times, in MotoGP there is too much electronics, the riders in that way don’t make a difference. Maybe in the same bikes they do, but in MotoGP there is too much, it’s hard to fight”.

“The bike here… it’s a bike, there’s electronics, but it’s basic. So we can fight and follow an opponent without being shaken or in major trouble.”

“As for going back there…I’m young, anything can happen, why not, we’ll see. At the moment the focus is here, I’m having a lot of fun and I’m fine with the team”, concluded the Spanish rider.
