Joan Mir said in the preview that it was increasingly important to start the grand prix well on Friday, that this saved him a lot of work on Saturday and gave him more options to go directly to Q2, the only way to get a decent classification on the grid, like the one he achieved in Portimao a week ago, when he was second, his best starting position since he was in MotoGP.
However, this Friday, when push came to shove, the Suzuki rider failed to close a good lap. In the morning, in FP1 (1st) he was very strong, both in race pace and in one lap, but in the afternoon he could not improve from 12th place. The Mallorcan, however, has an explanation.
“It hasn’t gone wrong, just what has happened is that in the penultimate start with the used tire I had to do three laps, I have lengthened it and left at six. I have left less time in the box to change to qualifying tyres, leaving me with only time to do two fast laps, the first to warm up and the second to attack the clock, but I went too far in turn two and the turn didn’t close well. I feel good with the bike, I have good sensations but I made the mistake of staying a little longer on the track with the medium used rubber, I have been feeling good and I was looking for sensations, but nothing changes for tomorrow”.
For Mir, not being in Q2 provisionally is not a problem since he considers that the times will drop and the ten classified will leave FP3 on Saturday morning.
“We will all have to do the same time, the times will drop. It is clear that Fabio Quartararo has ridden very fast today and they will not lose much of his time, but the rest of us will turn faster, so finishing 12th today does not change me no plans at all.”
“There are many corners with wet patches and outside the line it doesn’t dry out. The new asphalts for the World Cup don’t absorb water, it’s happened to us in Misano, in Austin and also in Portimao, the humidity persists and it doesn’t dry as much as it did a few years ago. years, like in Sepang, there before it would dry in five minutes and now it takes a long time, surely they are paving over it and that must be a problem. When Marc Márquez fell today it was because he was off the line, it is not for anything else. There is to study this issue because they are ugly falls that could be saved”, settles the one from Palma.
