The official entry list for the Italian Grand Prix to be held in Mugello next week presents the novelty of Michelle Pirro as a wild card for the Ducati team, while it does not include Jorge Martín , the young rookie who was injured after a heavy crash in Portimao .
Martín appears under the heading ‘out due to injury’, and next to the indication ‘ replaced by TBA ‘, which means that they are waiting to find out who will replace him in the important home Grand Prix of the Borgo Panigale brand.
For the moment, the pilot is not ruled out and continues to train to the maximum to try to reappear next week. Martín plans to undergo a check-up in Barcelona this Friday, so that the doctors who operated on him can determine the stage of his rehabilitation and if it is prudent to get back on a racing motorcycle.
Although the driver’s wish is to return to competition as soon as possible, Martín ‘s reappearance will depend on the exams this Friday and, ultimately, on the tests to which the doctors of the World Championship and the Mugello Circuit will submit him, if finally travel there on Thursday of next week.
For now, Pirro , a tester at the Bologna factory, is signed up to race for Ducati, which would field three red-painted bikes at its home grand prix. Another option, if Martín does not recover, is that he ends up replacing the Spaniard, since the regulations oblige Pramac to have two drivers.
In the last two races, Martín’s substitute was Tito Rabat , but the coincidence of the race in Mugello with an event of the SBK World Championship, in which the Catalan competes this year, excessively complicate the possibility of continuing in that role, although Tito himself did not rule it out in conversation with Motorsport.com .
Martín, who was injured on April 17 in Portimao, went through the operating room five days later to undergo three different surgeries: “One on the right hand, the big toe, another on the left knee that will take me a little longer , and then another one on the right foot, on the tibial malleolus, in total there will be three surgeries at the same time with three doctors and three different teams”, explained the pilot himself.
In the year of his MotoGP debut, Martín had made a brilliant start, achieving his first pole position and his first podium in the premier class in only his second grand prix, that of Doha .
