Having undergone right-hand surgery three weeks ago, the Pramac rider did not arrive in Assen fully fit. The three days on his Ducati in Germany did not facilitate the remission of his wrist pain, and the Madrid native confirms that the discomfort will continue this weekend.
“Maybe it’s worse than last weekend, because after the effort I made in the race, on Monday and Tuesday I was in a lot of pain, I couldn’t even train,” Martin explained before the test in Assen. “Here I will be in pain, but I will take strong painkillers to prevent it. That is our job and I will try to do my best.”
The weather forecast calls for a rainy weekend in the Netherlands, suggesting a race on a wet track that might require lower speeds. However, the Spanish pilot has preferences. “I’d rather not take any chances before the holidays! [Laughs] It’s better to have dry conditions.”
“It’s a shame, it looks like it’s going to rain for most of the weekend. It’s not something I want, but it’s the same for everyone. In the dry, I feel like we can do a really good job.”
Jorge Martín savored the victory in Assen (Moto3), the year of his title in 2018. However, this circuit has not been entirely easy for him. In 2016 he had to retire due to a hand injury, while in 2019, for his only Moto2 start at this track, an unfortunate crash ended his career.
Last year, during his first appearance in the premier class, the man from Madrid was still paying the consequences of his crash in Portimão and had to leave due to pain in his hand. Despite the fact that it continues to bother him a year later, Martín is confident that he will be in the right rhythm this weekend.
“Before it was a good track for me and last year I was quite good, although after the injury I was not 100%. I feel strong, so this year, with the new bike, I feel that we are stronger on tracks like Sachsenring and here”, concluded Martín.
