June in Spain: weather, what to pack and what to see

As the cool and floral spring leads to the sweet summer, Spain becomes one of the most popular destinations in Europe, and we’re not just talking about the temperature. Yes, the weather is quite warm with enough famous Spanish sunshine, but that’s not the only reason to visit Spain in June. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy a handful of exciting summer festivals and events across the country, while beating the large numbers of tourist crowds that tend to arrive in July and August.

Sounds good? Here’s your complete guide to visiting Spain in June, including expected forecasts, a suggested packing list, and events to keep on your radar.

Spain Weather in June

While the details of the forecast depend on where, exactly, in Spain you are, you can generally expect excellent weather in most parts of the country in June. The northernmost regions and Barcelona enjoy average daytime temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, and Madrid and Andalusia can hit 80s most days.

For the most part, rain is unlikely, but still very possible, especially at the beginning of the month and in the northern part of the country. A good way to remember this is to learn one of our favorite Spanish phrases: ” Don’t take off your sayo until May 40th” (literally, “Don’t put away your rain gear until May 40th). After June 9 or so, rainy days are few and far between. On the other hand, sunlight becomes more abundant at the end of the month, especially as you move south.

What to pack

When packing for Spain in June, think about lightweight, breathable fabrics that can be comfortably layered, especially if you plan to spend most of the day without having to return to your accommodation to change clothes. While the weather is generally great, early mornings and late nights can still be a bit chilly. When it comes to footwear, consider a pair of sandals or flats with a supportive sole, and remember that the locals don’t really wear flip flops beyond the beach. Add a bottle of sunscreen and a stylish pair of shades, and you’re ready to explore.

June events in Spain

Summer is the best festival season, and here in Spain, the locals are always ready to party. June plays host to all kinds of cultural events and celebrations across the country, so no matter where your travels take you, you definitely won’t be bored.

  • Pentecost Sunday marks the annual pilgrimage of the Romería del Rocío in southern Spain, in which thousands of families and individuals make their way from larger cities like Seville to the city of El Rocío, in the province of Huelva. They dress in traditional flamenco-inspired costumes and sing folk songs as they travel. The date changes every year, but the 2019 event will take place June 8-10.
  • La Patum de Berga is an authentic Catalan folk festival par excellence, which takes place from June 19 to 23 in the city of Berga. Expect lots of fire, dancing, and fat giants.
  • The Granada Music and Dance Festival , the most emblematic performing arts celebration in Andalusia, takes place from June 21 to July 12, 2019.
  • The Night of San Juan (Saint John’s Eve) on June 23 is celebrated throughout the country with fireworks and bonfires. The biggest celebrations take place in Catalonia and the Valencian Community (especially in Alicante).
  • Pride of Madrid , the largest gay pride event in Spain, begins in the capital on June 28, 2019 and runs until July 7.
  • The Wine Battle (exactly what it sounds like: a giant wine fight. What is not to love?) Takes place in Haro, La Rioja, on June 29, 2019.

Travel tips

  • Although June is generally not considered “high season” in much of Spain, the good weather, the packed calendar of events and thousands of miles of unspoiled beaches make it one of the most popular months of the year to visit. As a result, accommodation prices may start to increase this month.
  • Lines can be lengthened at some of Spain’s most famous attractions (such as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Alcázar in Seville) during the summer months.
