Kloeppel was just at a moderation. In the middle of the sentence “The British billionaire Richard Branson was in space today …” viewers saw only black – the presenter as well. The veteran, however, finished his sentence unmoved and then said to the audience: “And if you can no longer see me, but possibly hear me, I can tell you: The light has failed here in the studio. We’ll just keep going. “
The camera continued to run thanks to an emergency power generator. The headlights stayed off, however. “We have a bit of light here. I still have a small cell phone here, ”said Kloeppel in the mini-light to the US correspondent who was connected. Anchorman Kloeppel and sports presenter Andreas von Thien stayed on the air.
Kloeppel reported on Twitter after the broadcast: “I’m in the middle of a moderation and suddenly it turns buff – and the light was gone. And at the same time, of course, when you’re sitting in the studio, you think we’re not broadcasting any more. ”Then he recognized on the monitors that broadcast was still going on. “So I thought, I’ll just keep going – and hope that the light will come on again at some point”. The résumé of the experienced moderator: “I haven’t seen it like this before – and I don’t need it every day.”
The power failure was caused by a short circuit, as a spokeswoman for RTL said in Cologne on Monday. As a result, the electricity in the western part of the building failed. The short circuit caused smoke to develop, which led to a fire alarm. The spokeswoman emphasized that it was not a fire. At no point was there any danger to the employees.
