Berlin / Hamburg – After the death of the Holocaust survivor Esther Bejarano, the former president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany called for the deceased to continue their commitment against right-wing extremism. “Esther Bejarano saw herself as an obligation all her life to stand up for democracy, togetherness and respect, and with all her might she called for this commitment against new old right-wing extremism from society as well,” said Charlotte Knobloch. “There will be no substitute for your story and your voice, but we must all carry on your commitment.”
It was with great sadness that she learned of Bejarano’s death, said the President of the Israelite Religious Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria. “For many decades she was one of the loudest voices against oblivion, and her commitment has always been an inspiration. Above all, however, she has always managed to reach the younger generation in particular. “
Bejarano died on Saturday morning at the age of 96 in her adopted home Hamburg. The German Jew, born in Saarlouis, who survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, campaigned against right-wing extremism and racism for decades, for which she received numerous awards. dpa
