Leclerc steals the Miami GP pole from Sainz; Verstappen failed

Red Bull and Ferrari were called to star in the classification of the Miami GP, and so it was. After Leclerc led Q1 and Q2 on Saturday ahead of Verstappen , the fight for pole was vibrant, and finally the fastest was again the Monegasque, who will start first in Sunday’s race.

In the first attempt of the definitive Q3, Verstappen beat Charles Leclerc by only 0.064s and Carlos Sainz Jr. by 0.080s, but there was still one last lap to decide everything. Sainz took a step forward with a record in the first sector, but in the second his teammate regained the advantage and in the third he achieved the mark that would give him pole position, his third of the 2022 season.

Champion Max Verstappen made a mistake and was unable to complete the final lap, settling for third place, his first attempt having been just five thousandths (0.005 seconds) slower than Sainz’s.

Qualifying was disputed with tension but without drama, without any accidents or red flags after three interrupted free practice sessions.

Sergio Pérez managed to overtake a combative Valtteri Bottas at the last minute, but had no chance of getting close to the top three. The Finn will share the third row with Lewis Hamilton, sixth with the Mercedes.

Completing the top 10 were the AlphaTauri ( Gasly will start 7th and Tsunoda , 9th), Lance Stroll as the only Aston Martin (10th), and Lando Norris, 8th with the McLaren .

Fernando Alonso, as the only Alpine representative in qualifying after Ocon’s accident in FP3, was 32 thousandths away from moving on to Q3, and will start 11th. At the end of a hard-fought Q2, George Russell also fell by 45 thousandths and Sebastian Vettel, who lamented not drawing the chicane perfectly, by 86.

This was the Q1 of the Miami GP 2022 F1 classification

Faced with the possibility of an accident ruining their laps, more than half of the grid went out to roll as soon as the first round of qualifying in Miami started, forming a little train in the pitlane waiting for the green light to come on.

Leclerc was unsuccessful on his first lap and the Red Bulls took the lead, with a surprising Russell third and Sainz fourth. Hamilton, with an improvable first sector (a bad step through turns 7 and 8), could only be 10th on his first attempt, and fell to 12th when Alonso (eighth) and Zhou (fifth) crossed the finish line.

After a pit stop to refuel, Sainz first and Leclerc then took advantage of the improved track to advance. The man from Madrid took the lead for a few moments, until his teammate did a lap six tenths faster. Leclerc’s mark could not be surpassed by Verstappen either, who stayed at 0.362.

Alonso improved to be 11th, without lowering his time in the third sector (he brushed against the wall at turn 16), and with six minutes to go Hamilton, Gasly, Latifi and Albon were in the elimination zone. The last few minutes were intense, with Alonso rising to 16th place as Hamilton and Gasly improved. However, the two-time champion had no problem lowering his own mark by more than a second and moving up to 6th place.

Vettel also improved late, leaving Kevin Magnussen alongside Guanyu Zhou, Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi out of Q2. The Chinese from Alfa Romeo protested the traffic he encountered on his final lap, and in turn a tire lock was the cause of Magnussen’s elimination.

This was the Q2 of the classification of the Miami GP 2022 of F1

Q2 also started with several cars waiting at the end of the pit lane led by Mick Schumacher. Many started on used soft tyres, such as Sainz, who took the lead until Verstappen beat him by half a second with a record in the second and third sectors.

After the first few laps, Pérez was second, with the Ferraris behind and Hamilton fifth. Alonso was clinging to the top 10 in eighth place, with both Sainz and Leclerc fitted with new tyres. The Monegasque dropped to 1m29.130s to be first, but Sainz failed in the second sector and remained fourth.

In the absence of 5 minutes, the virtual eliminated were the Aston Martin, Mick Schumacher, Ricciardo and Russell. The Brit improved to 7th, sending Norris into the danger zone. The final moments were once again frantic, with the table full of green times (improvements) and a continuous change of positions.

At the end of a very close Q2, Alonso was 11th, eliminated in the second round, along with George Russell (12th), Sebastian Vettel (13th), Daniel Ricciardo (14th) and Mick Schumacher (15th).
