Leclerc takes pole in Singapore and Verstappen runs out of gas

The rain made an appearance in the last free practice session before the decisive classification that would define the positions for the starting grid, and the drivers took to the track with doubts about which tire to use, as the asphalt was drying up without pause but without rush.

In the final round that would mark who would be the author of the pole position, the vast majority rode the soft compound, but surprised with the intermediates Yuki Tsunoda, who was placed momentarily in the lead while he saw how Lewis Hamilton surpassed him by more than two seconds. . The seven-time world champion was not the only one who overtook the Japanese, as Max Verstappen was just behind, although Fernando Alonso stole the show by getting first.

Q3 was being a real madness, and every second that passed, everyone painted their sectors purple. It was clear that it would not be resolved until the last second, the man from Oviedo was on provisional pole and Leclerc passed him a few seconds from the end, but everyone still needed to see the checkered flag.

Thus, Charles Leclerc took an incredible pole position, ahead of Sergio Pérez and Lewis Hamilton. His partner, Carlos Sainz, could only be four, while Fernando Alonso was fifth, Lando Norris sixth and Pierre Gasly seventh.

The world champion failed on his last lap and was unable to get past eighth place, from where he will try to take the title on Sunday, although he will have to watch out for attacks from Kevin Magnussen, ninth, and Yuki Tsunoda, who closed the top 10

F1 2022 Singapore Grand Prix Q1 Recap

After a wet third free practice session with little action on the track due to the risk of having an accident, the riders found themselves with an unknown asphalt, and the fact is that the rain cleaned the rubber that had been accumulating throughout the Weekend. The Mercedes were the first to get to the end of the pitlane on the intermediate tyres, and although it seemed that the line was drying up, the drops were still coming out as the cars passed.

Precisely, those with the silver arrows were the fastest in the first moments, with George Russell ahead of Lewis Hamilton, but the rest of the main rivals, such as Charles Leclerc, who took the lead with more seven tenths ahead of the German team. The Prancing Horse duo replaced the Mercedes at the top, but as the minutes went by, the times dropped more and more until Max Verstappen’s 1:54.395 .

With half of the first qualifying round still to go, neither driver dared to ride the slicks, and both Haas and Williams, as well as Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren, were in the danger zone. However, everything could change in seconds, since the track was drying out, which caused the times to drop.

With less than two minutes to go until the checkered flag, all but the two AlphaTauri were in the garage, although some were passing through the pitlane to change tires. As everyone was finishing their last run, several drivers passed through the elimination zone, and a yellow flag by Lance Stroll could mean that some of them failed to improve their time in the second sector.

When the situation cleared up, and everyone passed the finish line, the last positions for Sunday’s starting grid were defined, made up of Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi. From the top they saw how those pilots fell Max Verstappen, a day after turning 25 , Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, while Fernando Alonso did not have much trouble.

F1 2022 Singapore Grand Prix Q2 Recap

For the second round of qualifying at Marina Bay, the drivers rushed out because they knew the track would improve a lot, and although everyone was on the intermediates, it was possible that someone would take a risk on the dry. After the first attempt, Charles Leclerc took the lead, followed by Lewis Hamilton and some surprising Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso, but the two Red Bulls were yet to set their record. Once the team from Milton Keynes crossed the finish line, they placed second and third, with the reigning world champion ahead of Sergio Pérez, and Carlos Sainz, who was the only favorite who did not yet have a competitive time.

The rest of the field was ordered with Hamilton, Norris and the only remaining Alpine, Alonso, while Yuki Tsunoda, George Russell, Guanyu Zhou and the two Haas were in the danger zone. With less than five minutes to go, Vettel and Stroll’s Aston Martins put on the soft dry compound for the first time, and all eyes were on them to see if they improved.

Those from Silverstone had to warm up the tires, but the rest continued with the intermediates except for Zhou. In the last lap launched, the two AMR22 could not improve, but there was still the option of aborting to speed up the finish line in a final attempt.

With fear in the body of those who were close to falling eliminated, several that were running improved, and although he was used to the maximum, George Russell was left out of Q3, as were the Aston Martins, with Lance Stroll 12th and Sebastian Vettel 14th, while Mick Schumacher was 13th and Guanyu Zhou, who closed the time table in this round.

At the front, and with more calm, Charles Leclerc dominated, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and the two Red Bulls, although the surprise of the Singapore Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso, who was left alone as the only Enstone single-seater in the fight for Q3.
