The free practice sessions of the Monaco GP had left us clues as to what awaited us in qualifying, and this Saturday Sergio Pérez and the Ferraris dueled before the eyes of a surprised Verstappen who was always behind his Mexican teammate. Charles Leclerc led Q1 and Q2, and put in an incredible lap of 1m11.376s to take first place at the start of Q3.
In the second attempt, the Monegasque was improving his record even more, but Monaco once again left us an incredible finish with an accident and a red flag. While they were trying to overtake him, Checo Pérez suffered an accident just at the entrance curve to the tunnel, and he was left crossed. Carlos Sainz, who was just behind, could not avoid him, and ended up impacting with the Red Bull stopped on the track.
Max Verstappen was able to avoid the multiple accident by braking in time, but then the red flag appeared that ended the session and left the Dutchman fourth. He will start not only behind the Ferraris (Sainz will start second after Leclerc), but also after his teammate Pérez, third.
This is Leclerc’s fifth pole position in 2022, his 14th in Formula 1 and his second in Monaco. Last year Q3 ended with his accident and on Sunday he had to leave before starting. Will this finally be his year?
Fernando Alonso became the ‘first of the rest’ with just a few minutes to finish qualifying, when he was fifth. However, Lando Norris and George Russell improved, and when he wanted to do it, almost instantly than Pérez and Sainz, he suffered an accident that ended his session. Still, if he hadn’t missed, he would have run into the Red Bull and Ferrari incident, so his shot didn’t change the end result much.
The Spaniard, therefore, will start seventh, sharing the fourth row of the grid with a Lewis Hamilton who also had no chance of overtaking his teammate at Mercedes. They closed the top 10, also in Q3, Sebastian Vettel and Esteban Ocon.
Q1 had some controversy when the stewards decided to issue a red flag after Tsunoda touched the wall, despite the fact that the Japanese from AlphaTauri managed to reach the pits. That spoiled some drivers’ attempts and forced a final scramble in less than two minutes, with several unable to make it in time for one last attempt.
Will the 2022 rules be good enough to see a fun, overtaking race? The answer, Sunday afternoon.

This was the Q1 of the Monaco GP 2022 F1 classification
Although several cars took to the track as soon as the green light came on for Q1 in Monte Carlo qualifying, the favorites took it a little more calmly. Hamilton led at times until Checo Pére z took the lead with a 1:14.369 that Verstappen beat by 74 thousandths of a second later.
Leclerc failed to get close on the first try, and Alonso took advantage of the improved track to drop to 1m14.148s to take the lead. His moment of glory, however, was short-lived, and both Pérez and Sainz and Verstappen surpassed him. The curious thing was that both Checo and Carlos marked a 1:13.292, an exact time, pinned, tied.
Leclerc dropped to 1:12.939 and Alonso, on asphalt that was still improving, surprised by staying fifth, four tenths behind Ferrari and Red Bull , while Ocon was only 12th. In the last minutes, in the elimination positions were the Williams, the Alfa Romeo and Vettel. But the table was changing every moment and several pilots passed through there.
With two and a half minutes remaining, an accident by Yuki Tsunoda led to a red flag that stopped the session, leaving a very intense finish. Ricciardo, Ocon, Latifi, Tsunoda himself and Zhou were virtually eliminated, with Vettel and Norris on the brink.
The replay showed that Tsunoda had quickly returned to the box and therefore the red flag seemed unnecessary. In fact, the Japanese was able to go out again later, and would achieve the pass to Q2.
By the time Q1 resumed, a train of cars had formed at the end of the pitlane. The lap out of the pits began in a hurry, and several ran out of time. Ultimately, the Williamses went down alongside a surprising Pierre Gasly (who couldn’t make the last lap), Lance Stroll and an angry Guanyu Zhou.

This was the Q2 of the Monaco GP 2022 F1 classification
A line of cars waited at the end of the pitlane at the start of Q2, with Verstappen’s Red Bull leading the pack. The first lap showed an incredible equality between the Ferraris and Pérez, and only 33 thousandths separated Pérez, leader, from Leclerc, third. Verstappen was half a second behind his teammate and his rivals while Alonso, penultimate to set his time, moved up to fifth.
At the second attempt, Verstappen lowered his mark but not enough to drop out of fourth place, and as everyone headed back to the pits, those temporarily eliminated were Magnussen, Bottas, Tsunoda, Ricciardo and Mick Schumacher.
Leclerc improved his time and beat Pérez by 90 thousandths, while Tsunoda improved to put Vettel in the elimination zone. Several improved in their last attempts, and although Alonso was tenth, no one else advanced from behind and the Asturian entered Q3. Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, Daniel Ricciardo and Mick Schumacher did fall in that second round.
