Lecuona said on Thursday that he felt “free” after announcing KTM that he would not continue next year and that once his dismissal was known, he is working calmly, being able to develop his full potential.
This Sunday, the Valencian, who started far behind on the grid (18th), crossed the finish line 7th, less than 10 seconds off the podium, which was closed by Aleix Espargaró.
Once again, Lecuona made up a lot of positions and fighting with those in front, he was able to deploy all his driving.
“I screwed up in qualifying on Saturday and you pay for that. We had a good pace to be in front, we have recovered many places, in the end three KTMs in the top 10. When you start so far behind, sometimes it goes well and sometimes it goes wrong. You can’t think what would have happened starting later on the grid. We have to follow the same dynamic, but we have to improve on Saturday to be able to have more options in the race”, summed up Iker.
Coming up 11 positions and finishing 7th, this Sunday’s race is possibly Lecuona’s best.
“Honestly I would say yes, because last year in Misano I did very well but I didn’t finish because I fell. I think it’s my best race in MotoGP. I have felt comfortable, strong, we have overtaken many people, like Joan Mir, who is world champion. You look strong and you see that you have the potential for which we work every day,” he said.
“Mentally I moved up a notch in Austria after knowing I wasn’t going to be in the team next year. In the second race at the Red Bull Ring we made up a lot of places and this weekend we have been improving since Friday. We have taken a big step and in Aragón we will be able to continue along the same lines”, concluded the young Valencian runner.
