The Briton finished third in the championship last year and starts as one of the main favorites for the Moto2 title in 2021 after the promotion to MotoGP of the current champion and runner-up, Enea Bastianini and Luca Marini
Kicking off his seventh season in the series, Lowes has lived up to the hype, winning both races at Losail ahead of Remy Gardner and thus moving into the championship lead.
Thinking that a good season could take him to the Moto2 title and that all the champions ended up moving up to MotoGP sooner or later, Lowes does not consider taking that step at any price. Burned by his difficult season with Aprilia in 2017, his priority is to stay where he is now if he doesn’t receive an interesting offer from the premier class.
“In this championship, results are everything,” replies the Marc VDS rider. “You need results to get opportunities. For me, I’m probably in the best team in Moto2, so unless I have the possibility of a very good contract in MotoGP, I’d rather stay where I am. But we’re not getting any younger, so It all depends on what happens.”
The 2017 season with Aprilia was devastating for Lowes. The Lincoln driver only entered the points twice and was told during the year that he would not continue in 2018 despite having a deal.
The possibility of having first level material will be even more difficult in 2022 due to the fact that there will be few places available in the leading teams.
“Next season there are many closed things for MotoGP and few opportunities. Also, I have been in some bad situations, so I am not going to go back to scenarios that do not give me good results or that do not motivate me. That said, it is something that I I have to win on merit.”
“At the moment I only think about this season and my priority is to stay where I am, unless a really good opportunity comes to me in MotoGP. And there are not many for 2022, but many things can happen. I have to continue doing what I did [ in Losail]. If I do what I did […] maybe things can change.
