Man is said to have hit deaf woman in car races

A man speeds through downtown Würzburg. He wants to show an opponent that his car is faster, believe the prosecutor. A deaf woman crosses the street.

[Würzburg -] After an allegedly illegal car race in Würzburg, a 22-year-old has to answer for attempted murder before the district court of the Mainstadt.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the accused accepted the death of a deaf pedestrian with his reckless driving style.

The man is said to have delivered a prohibited car race with an opponent in Würzburg on December 1, 2019. He captured the now 44-year-old who crossed the street with her dog at Grün. The woman and the animal suffered minor injuries.

Accusation: attempted murder

The German is accused of having driven through a red light. He is said to have rented his high-horsepower car beforehand. A second speedster is said to have been involved in the car race, but it has not yet been found.

In addition to attempted murder, the public prosecutor’s office also accuses the adolescent of dangerous bodily harm as a result of prohibited motor vehicle racing and deliberate road traffic hazard.

Nationwide, the judiciary has already dealt several times with the question of whether speeders in their mostly souped-up and highly motorized cars are potential murderers and accept the death of others approvingly. A decision by the Berlin Regional Court in February 2017, when two drivers were convicted of murderers, was groundbreaking. It was the first murder sentence against a car racer in Germany.

The process was supposed to start in January, but had been postponed due to the corona. [dpa]
