Marc Márquez: "Retiring was an option, I hit rock bottom in 2021"

Marc Márquez was one of the protagonists of the premiere of MotoGP Unlimited, the new documentary series of the championship that will be released on March 14. Before starting and sharing the projection of the first two chapters, the eighth champion met with the media to comment on his last season, one of the most critical years of his life.

2021 has been the most complicated course for the Cervera rider, forcing him, little by little, to organize his personal and sporting priorities.

“In the 2020/2021 season I hit rock bottom,” Márquez told the COPE microphones.

Reviewing the Jerez accident and prolonging its ballast until the end of the year, Marc Márquez places the mental sacrifice of 2021 as one of the reasons that could have prompted his withdrawal.

“With the double vision, I couldn’t do anything because it made me dizzy. In fact, the doctor, after the operation, told me that it was a miracle that I got my sight back.”

“Psychologically it is difficult and the sporting aspects have taken a backseat.”

Although retirement was an option, #93 confirms that he can get the adrenaline rush of winning again and announces that he is ready to return to action.

“The DNA is not lost, when I lose it I will have to finish my career… And that happened to me this winter, I thought about not racing again because there were real options for that to happen. The doctor gave me options and the third was: ‘My Eyesight will probably be fine for a normal life, but you can’t go 155 miles an hour on a motorcycle.

Marc Márquez landed in Madrid for the premiere of the documentary after a satisfactory preseason, finalizing the details for the start of the course in Qatar.

“Right now there are 12 bikes that can win the World Championship, but the favorites are the current champion and the runner-up, Fabio Quartararo and Pecco Bagnaia,” said Márquez, before concluding by referring to his compatriot in tennis, Rafa Nadal. “If your name isn’t Rafa Nadal, he can’t be the favorite to win after being injured for two years.”
